No longer a favorite
by WickedWahine at Citysearch
This has been a favorite place of mine. The booths are very uncomfortable but the food has been consistantly good so we were willing to put up with it. Recently though there have been changes. They started charging for chips without pointing it out to returning guests. They add additional items to the bill so you have to be careful when you pay to double check everything. And the service was poor. Had to wait forever to get the bill and they weren't even busy.
Will be looking for a new place to go.
- Pros: The food is good
- Cons: Poor service, overcharging, etc.
Delicious Carne Asada Tacos, Average Otherwise
by poindekster at Citysearch
This restaurant is my personal favorite among Mexican places in Anchorage. This is in large part because of a single dish, which I highly recommend: carne asada tacos. I also like their complimentary salsa and the fact that the chips are baked and not fried. The few other dishes I have had there were fairly standard -- no better or worse than most other places. However, when I stumbled up the carne asada tacos, I was hooked. The service has been unpredictable in the couple dozen times I have been there. There have been times I went and received great service. Other times it was like pulling teeth to get someone to the table. Either way, the tacos are so good, I keep coming back.
The carne asada tacos consist of steak strips seared with a delicious seasoning and pico de gallo in soft corn tortillas. You can get them ala carte or with rice and beans. I order them with a side of cheese (which is over-priced) and pour in some of the house mild salsa to make the perfect taco. I am not a fan of sour cream or guacamole, so I don't miss these additions. Someone else might and would be disappointed to see the prices for each of these sides (adding a side of cheese, guac and sour cream and you could just about buy another dinner!).
The dinner dish is about $13 and consists of 2 tacos and rice and beans. The lunch version is several dollars less and has one taco (if I remember correctly). Ala carte prices are $3.50 for one, 6.50 for 2 and 8 for 3.
