A Real Hardcore Gym
by drusn at Citysearch
I can thoroughly train during winter months for my summer competitions. Polaris lets me bring in inmplements to get in practice swings for the Highland Games. I can be noisy, drop weights, and chalk up when dealing with the amount of weight I push. I can change the usage of a piece of equipment for my specific need. They allow me to bring plates and barbells/dumbells into the cardio room for my cardio workout. Try doing that at Alaska Club or Powerhouse. There are no airs at this gym. It is not a fashion statement. It exists to make you work hard and sweat more, not check out the cutie next too you and be distracted.
- Pros: Can bring my own equipment to train
- Cons: Hours on Saturday and Sunday
Great GYM

Polaris GYM is last of the OLD school gyms in Anchorage where a strength athlete can train heavy, use chalk and pursue uncommon strength. The equipment is well used and why not, they all can last a life time with care. Bill Frick hasn't yet succumbed to operating like the other commercial facilities where your welcome as long as your happy to run on their squirrel cages and only lift moderate weights. If your one of those who has to have fresh carpet, new equipment that looks like its never been used and love paying 2-3 times as much then you will feel more comfortable at the "other club" , you know the one that has cornered the market in Anchorage, charges exorbitant prices, and discourages real strength training. If you were able to compare the % of members at Polaris who actually use the gym compared to the % members at that other place who never show after joining you will see that Polaris is patronized by the serious strength athlete and fitness enthusiast who actually use their memberships and want Value.
- Pros: Breath of fresh air
WORST GYM EVER
by UNKNOWNHh at Citysearch
It might be cheap, but you get what you pay for. The equipment is old, the tanning beds are old, The entire place is SH*T. The employees don't know their A** from a hole in the ground. The owner is a liar, he is rude, and he will treat you like SH*T. I'm not only saying this because that was the treatment I received, but other people I know that are former members of this gym as well. If you try to cancel your membership, be prepared to deal with the owner being a total AS*HOLE, hanging up on you AND continuing to charge your account...even after MULTIPLE attempts to tell this rude man you want to cancel. This man does not know how to properly run a business. If you are still attracted to this gym because of the price like I was, just consider the facts: You will have a membership to a crappy, rundown gym, the employees there can rarely help you with any questions you have, the owner will ignore you and treat you rudely, the equipment is from the 80's (as well as the tanning bed...there are pictures on the walls in the tanning rooms that tell you how much sun exposure is GOOD for you) and you will be stuck with a membership to SH*TTY gym.Take my advice, DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM YOU WILL REGRET IT LATER!
- Pros: There is nothing good about this gym.
