Terrible service but good "eats"

by Hanksta at Citysearch

Sorry for the lenghty post -- Lunch, 11:20 a.m., 11-10-11 As expected the food was very tasty, prepared in a timely manner & priced reasonably enough. ( I had calamari, my co-worker had the French onion soup.) I'd give 4 stars for the food.

***However, if I could give negative stars for the service received today (or near absolute absence there-of) I would.*** I've been a patron of F Street Station since shortly after arriving in AK compliments of the USAF in 1991. From that point up until the past several years I was a fairly regular customer there. Admittedly, I've not frequented the establishment for a couple of years as I now have young children and other focus' in life.

Perhaps the ownership/management has changed in recent years. Prior to today's visit, I'd never encountered a single negative experience from the staff there. Today, when I first entered, the older blonde bartender/waitress obligingly offered me change to put in the parking meter out front. After that point, she would have been hard pressed to have been more discourteous. Despite the fact the place was sparsely patroned at best (maybe 5 or 6 people seated about) she all but ignored us for 10 to 15 mins. After that point, she did wander past the table and mumble something about the other bartender/waitress (who we'd not seen at all to that point) would come take our order. Then w/in 30 secs. or so, the older blonde bartender/waitress returned to take our order. I ordered calamari, a French onion soup and ice water to drink. My co-worker ordered French onion soup and a coke. She then proceeded to deliver 2 cokes (no big deal but also no waters.) Then she delivered our food - my calamari but no French onion soup and my co-workers lunch as ordered. She did come by once after 20 mins. or so to see if my co-worker wanted more soda (as his glass had been empty for probably 15 of the 20 mins since her last visit.) There was never a smile, a "here you go', a "can I get you anything else", a "do you guys want some desert", .... nothing. Which had she been treating other patrons similarly I'd (we'd) have written off to her having a bad day. But she was actually chatty and engaging with some of the other customers....

Then when she was preparing our check, she was putting in my order as being for deep fried halibut chunks which is twice the cost ($18) of the calamari I had....... I felt that I was being pretty generous in giving her a 50 cent tip. Which made me feel like a heel because I usually leave 15% for semi okay service and far more for good service...... too bad......

Good Food, Crap Bartenders

by AlaskanAdam at Citysearch

I like the food.

Drinks are overpriced, service mediocre.

TRUE STORY: one bartender lady - never seen her before - left me hanging for my first drink of the night for about fifteen minutes, helping several walk-up newcomers before me. So I paid for the drink and didn't leave a tip. So half an hour later I stroll up to buy my cousin a rum & coke for his birthday and the same lady asks "Why'd you stiff me last time?". I don't know what hospitality school she learned that from. So I tell her, and she gets mad and says "FINE!". She then measures out a small shot of rum with a little shotglass, and intentionally makes me the weakest rum & coke I've ever seen. I buy the drink and leave .50 cents change, and as I walked away she threw the two quarters at the back of my head! In hindsight I should have called the cops for assault and made the owner kiss my A $$ before dropping charges.

Haha good food though.

Quit Whining

by Letz at Citysearch

I stumbled onto this page while researching the F. St. Station company history.

I have read review after review on this site saying the F. St. Station is an unsafe place to dine. It is a Bar in downtown Anchorage! While the increase in UAA hockey players has lead to some unsavory fits of adolescent violence, this is true of any bar in that area. Anytime a metropolitan area has 6-8 popular drinking spots within walking distance there is bound to be unpreventable problems.

As far as blaming the staff, this is just poor judgment. I have been witness to 3 altercations that have resulted there. In one an individual reacted poorly and tried to fight a nearby man who made a comment. The security promptly contained and removed the individual. The other was shook up but handled himself fine. Alcohol was a FACTOR!

If you can not hold your own in a bar in Alaska then don't go. The F. St. is no different then any other bar in the area that is afflicted with the same problem. I have witnesses countless fights in bars downtown. Guess how many punches I have received in 7 years of attending these establishment. None. Maybe I'm lucky.

Anytime there is a social gathering and different strangers mingle, there is bound to be some altercations. It happens at little league, and it happens at Alaskan bars. The street is an unsafe place to walk, but I bet you continue to walk over them everyday.

In closing, Go eat there in the afternoon. They have some of the best food in town year round. But anyone who expects to see a downtown Anchorage pubs best service after 9 p.m. is going to be disappointed. That's just how it is in that area at that time of night. Security does there best to provide service to all and filter out those that are of an unsavory crowd. But beware... It's a bar. Alcohol will be served there, and if you haven't been around inebriated people before, then you probably won't like it.

Quit Whining and go get your stitches.

  • Pros: Great Food, Knowledgeable staff, Suicidally Awesome Chili !
  • Cons: It's a bar downtown

Still the best food

by woxof at Citysearch

Lot of talk lately about bad things going on at F. St. I decided to go see for myself, as I have been away from Anchorage for a few years, and now back to stay. I found the food to still be some of the best around. The service was nothing to complain about either. Food arrived quickly, and was delicious, as I had remembered it from before. I don't know about the nature of the bar later at night, as I was there in the afternoon, and early evening on the few times I was there. I have no complaints at all. I tend to think some of the stories have been embellished as time goes by, and maybe people should hear the other side of the story before making a decision. Or stop by and see for yourself. Maybe the reports about staying away late at night or correct. So go there in the afternoon or early evening, and decide for yourself. I know that I'll continue to go there to enjoy the food.

  • Pros: great food, nice atmosphere, excellent daily specials
  • Cons: could use more room to dine at. limited table space.
